64-Bit Color in DirectX 9

Microsoft DirectX Meltdown 2001 starts today and lasts until July 18th in Seattle. Most of the topics will be covering DirectX 8 development, but some information on DirectX 9 will be revealed.

So far we know a higher level programmable shader language will make its way into DX9. This will allow faster development for more hardware configurations. Also, Microsoft mentions considering higher color depth support and architecture optimizations.

Would that higher color depth be 64-bit color? It would certainly be the next logical step. 64-bit color allows 16 bits per channel (ARGB). That's 65536 levels of intensity per channel compared to only 256 levels found in 32-bit color. Say goodbye to color banding even when multiple layers of blending and fog are in use. If I recall correctly, John Carmack of id Software had mentioned the desire for 64-bit color for over a year now so that more blending can occur without any banding. It's about time 64-bit color gets implemented. Maybe DOOM 4 will make good use of this?

Are games a royal pain?

It looks like the monarch currently known as Prince Charles is accusing computer games of being a royal pain. The prince is calling for lotto money to be used to sway children away from computer games to more constructive things such as books. This is just my opinion but I think the prince may just be upset after being fragged too many times in Quake 3 at the recent royal LAN parties going on at the palace. More on this as the story develops.
