Sega and Sony hook up 2001-06-05 | posted by Chairman Steve | print
Sega and Sony plan to network their consoles together for online gaming. Dreamcast, PlayStation 2, and PC gamers will get to compete via the Internet. Eventually GameCube and Xbox may get thrown into the mix also, since Sega is discussing similar arrangements with Nintendo and Microsoft. The move, which lets Sega's discontinued Dreamcast connect with Sony's PlayStation 2, is the industry's first cross-console networking and is aimed at expanding the online gaming market, a Sega spokesman said.
Under the arrangement, Sega will create versions of its online games, including a sequel to the popular role-playing game "Phantasy Star Online," for the Dreamcast, PlayStation 2 and the PC. Players will then be able to compete via the Internet regardless of which system they use.
